The Australian Rules Football 2012 Season kicked off in fine style on 24 th March in Sydney . Long established Sydney team , the Swans , soundly defeated new glamour team of the competition Greater Western Sydney Giants . Playing in their distinctive Red and White footy jumpers ,  the Swans thrilled the local crowd. The inexperienced young Giants, looked good in their brightly coloured football jumpers of orange , charcoal and white, but were no match for the more experienced Swans .

In a break from tradition , the AFL opened the 2012 season , with the two Sydney teams playing the seasons opening game in Sydney . Melbourne , spiritual home to AFL football , will have to wait until thursday night to see their first live game between the Tigers and Blues  . Another blockbuster follows on friday night between the Magpies and  Hawks , with a Saturday afternoon game at the MCG between Melbourne and the Lions . Footy starved fans will be along to watch all the action wearing their football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys .
