The Fitzroy Lions were a proud inner urban club , of Melbourne , whose staunch supporter base were starved of funds , when they fought a legal battle with the AFL , to resist amalgamation .
The resultant Brisbane Lions team , who followed the defunct Brisbane Bears , the AFL's other Queensland based team , enjoyed 4 halycon years in the spotlight . Recording a record breaking 3 year reign of consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003 , they rode a crest of unprecedented success , not experienced by any other afl team .
A refurbished ground and mercurial players , like Jonathon Brown and Michael Voss , has boosted their popularity with locals and visitors alike . Recent poor form , and bad publicity surrounding star recruit Brendon Fevola , has disenchanted some fans but they still enjoy great popularity, at home and away clashes .
