1859 saw the foundation of the Melbourne Football Club . ( aka the Demons )
In 1862 it became a foundation member of the Victorian Football Association . In1897 it became a foundation member of the Victorian Football League (VFL) competition which later became the national Australian Football League (AFL).
Celebrating its 150 year anniversary in 2009 , the club created football jumpers , with celebratory shields , to commemorate this milestone .
As one of the older , founding clubs of the AFL competition , it is a club steeped in history , and enjoys the home ground privileges of the MCG. Playing in a traditional navy blue and red football jumper , it is a club that has employed players of outstanding skill , such as Ron Barassi and Jim Stynes . Recent success has eluded this proud club , and it has not won a premiership flag since 1964 , and its premierships tally remains at 12 .
